For those born in an earlier era, interiors were bound to have left a strong impression. From plush fabrics to gilded wallpaper, the relative prosperity of the 1950s saw homeowners embracing more lavish furnishings after years of frugality. One for the fashion-forward parents, this boudoir-style bedroom is as glam as it gets thanks to the crystal-drop chandelier and intricate headboard.

With it's sleeping space-cum-office double purpose, this '50s bedroom is a perfect throwback to when homes were much smaller. The decade was characterised by a return to natural materials with wooden panelling and cane furniture taking centre stage. Pastel hues were huge in the mid-20th century as shown in this recreation 1950s bedroom. The decade also saw a move towards kitsch pieces with a sense of fun, like this pair of figurine lamps and that spectacular bedspread! The iconic basket weave-effect linoleum floor is another design classic from the fabulous '50s.

With its panelled walls, this bedroom is a typical example of the prefab Lustron houses that sprang up in the States during the post-war era. Money may have been tight, but that didn't stop people from creating their dream homes and decorative soft furnishings were often patterned with botanical prints. Beige 1950s bedroom
From the mottle cut-and-loop carpet to the frilled orange pelmet, this bedroom combines pastels and warm tones that were widespread in homes during this decade. The scale of furniture was usually much smaller in the '50s - notice how narrow this double bed looks! People owned fewer possessions and were smaller on average than they are today, and these neat little pieces were built to fit them.

Considered a golden age for furniture design, the taste in the 1960s home leaned towards smooth and sleek styles with tapered legs in warm wood like teak and walnut. Bedroom sets were very much a thing, and matching pieces would be bought together. With its practical storage headboard and vibrant scatter cushions, this neutral bedroom is the perfect blend of style and practicality. Perhaps your folks or grandparents had something similar?

Patterns became progressively more flamboyant in the 1960s with clashing prints, bold florals and intricate paisleys all fair game. Mixing and matching a variety of motifs, this everyday bedroom shows how most people's bedrooms looked at that time. Often small, they would use heirloom pieces – such as this Art Deco dressing table – along with fashionable patterns and colours to make the best of what they could. And most women would have had a hairbrush set laid out, just like this.

One of the schemes delivered on the now legendary UK makeover programme Changing Rooms, this angelic bedroom really runs away with its heavenly design concept. From the hand-drawn blinds and motif on the bed linen, you can see a lot of this was made by the team with a minuscule budget, but it encapsulates a certain whimsy that was characteristic of the time.

Not for the fainthearted, this vibrant red and orange scheme also featured on Changing rooms. Saris and Indian-inspired design were very much in vogue on the fashion scene, and somehow that made the leap into our homes too. We love the fabric behind the bedhead and four-poster effect created by draping more silk from the ceiling.

Classic cream 2000s bedroom
Muted hues were in vogue in the early 2000s with beiges, browns and creams dominating the design scene. The new millennium also saw a return to more classical styles with a particular emphasis on carved wooden furniture. If you kept up with noughties trends, your bedroom probably had at least a hint of Tuscan villa to it.
2005 IKEA bedroom
By 2005 we were all under the spell of these Swedish trendsetters, who not only sold everything you might need under one blue and yellow roof but also showed us how to style our rooms in their amazing catalogues. This classic bedroom brings IKEA's practical approach to storage with the Scandi love of light spaces together, finished off with comfy layers on the bed and a neat table lamp. Definitely of its time but still looks good to us!

There's not a teen girl who grew up in the 2000s who didn' want to hang something flowy above the bed as this set-up from the US lifestyle retailers Limited Too clearly demonstrates. Aside from the dreamy lilac walls, butterflies and flowers were big news, preferably 'randomly appliqued' to your bedspread. Good times!
